The Independence Square and Park, Plaza Independencia, is an urban space, located in the City of Mendoza, Argentina. It was inaugurated in 1863.
After the earthquake that devastated the old city of Mendoza in 1861, its subsequent reconstruction by Engineer Julio Balloffet, made it a priority to create spaces that would serve as shelter against new earthquakes. In this way the current Plaza Independencia arose. In its early years, the square was known by the name of Park, and its design featured a balustrade and an artificial lake that was the main attraction of the place.
The square has an area of more than 55,000 square meters (13.6 acres), a fountain of dancing waters with the frieze "La Libertad, esa gesta anónima." During the weekends, a fair is organized for artisans who sell their products, with stalls in some of its side streets. In addition, street shows are common, so the square is very visited.
